Ready for the largest slumber party ever for your four-legged friends? Chapa's Group Campground can accommodate you and your friends (of the horse variety)! The Chapa's Group Equestrian Campground has several amenities, including a nine-stall barn, water troughs, 12 electric hookup campsites, fire rings, picnic tables, and a swimming hole. It's the only campground in Hill Country with electric hookups, so you can pitch a tent on a first-come, first-served basis if the campground isn't already rented.
In Hill Country State Park, you will find back-to-basic wilderness trails that equestrians can't get enough of. Your horse will also appreciate them! There are 40 miles to cover, so you can spread out and take your time. There are also primitive campsites available if you want to tough out some nights in the woods. Horses have access to well water, but potable water is not available, so bring your own!
The Hill Country State Natural Area offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, primitive camping, backpacking, and nature-watching. We can accommodate your group at our lodge. Explore 5,000 acres of rugged canyons, picturesque plateaus, and peaceful creek bottoms on this former ranch northwest of San Antonio. Experience a more relaxed time and place away from the bustle of modern life.
Trails
Various trails range from easy to challenging, ranging in length from one mile to miles and miles. You can enjoy the easy Heritage Loop by walking past remnants of the former ranch. A steep climb leads to a panoramic view of the western Hill Country from the West Peak Overlook, which is a favorite among staff.
Horseback riding
Bringing your own horse to explore the natural area is allowed (you must provide proof of a current Coggins certificate). There is a wide variety of terrain on the trails, ranging from flat, broad prairies to steep, rocky canyons. There is an equestrian area adjacent to headquarters that is available for day use and has a water trough, hitching posts, and a flush toilet. An equestrian campsite is also available for overnight stays. Horse-washing stations are not available in order to conserve water.
Equestrian arenas are available only by reservation; contact the natural area for more information.
Camping
Come back to nature at one of our primitive walk-in or hike-in campsites. There are vault toilets near these sites, but no showers. The lodge is suitable for both horseback riders and non-riders. There is a kitchen and a bathroom, and it sleeps nine people. Close by, there are five stalls, two pens, and corrals.
Horseback riders may reserve a site at the group camp or the equestrian campsite. The group camp has a barn with nine stalls. Water and a vault toilet are available nearby, but there are no showers.
