KCL Campground offers a rustic, authentic camping experience in the heart of Carrizo Plain National Monument, California. Perfect for horse enthusiasts and nature lovers, this historic site combines equestrian facilities with the serene beauty of California's largest grassland. Formerly part of the Kern County Land Company, KCL Campground retains some of the original structures, including a few barns and corrals, evoking the rich history of the area.
KCL Campground is a first-come, first-served campsite with no reservation system, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a spontaneous and peaceful escape. There are 12 campsites, two of which are elevated and ADA-compliant, offering accessibility and comfort to all campers. Each site includes a picnic table, fire pit, and access to horse corrals, making it an excellent choice for horseback riders looking to explore the vast open plains of the monument.
While the campground is designed to be simple and rustic, it lacks certain amenities like electricity and drinking water, which enhances the natural and remote camping experience. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own supplies and act responsibly by packing out any refuse they bring in, as there is no garbage service on-site. The campground does, however, offer ADA-compliant vault toilets for convenience.
In addition to the rich history of the Kern County Land Company, KCL Campground boasts some of the few shade trees found within Carrizo Plain National Monument, providing respite from the sun. The remnants of the original barn structures still stand on the site, reminding visitors of the land’s agricultural past. However, campers are asked to respect the area by refraining from entering the barns, which are no longer safe for public access.
The campsite’s quiet and secluded atmosphere allows visitors to enjoy the beauty of the Carrizo Plain. This expansive, untouched landscape is home to a variety of wildlife and unique geological features, offering plenty of opportunities for exploration and adventure. The lack of modern conveniences like cell service and electricity encourages campers to unplug and immerse themselves in nature.
For those traveling with horses, KCL Campground provides well-maintained horse corrals, making it an ideal location for equestrian camping. The surrounding monument offers expansive trails for horseback riding, where riders can experience the breathtaking views of the San Andreas Fault, the sweeping plains, and the occasional sighting of local wildlife like pronghorn antelope or California condors.
Horseback riders can explore the extensive trails of Carrizo Plain National Monument, where the wide-open spaces and lack of urban distractions offer a true sense of freedom and adventure. The area's historical significance, combined with its stunning natural landscapes, make it a favorite destination for those seeking to reconnect with the land.
