Wendell spent the last few years of his life in search of a suitable equestrian staging area in the Tahoe area. He was concerned about the future conflicts between growth and access to the beautiful high Sierra trails. He also wanted to provide a long term starting location for the Tevis Ride.

In 1990 the Robie Foundation purchased 160 acres between Lake Tahoe and Truckee to fulfill Wendell
